2012 WORLD WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2012 World Women’s Championships appeared to be a record breaking in participation: 178 athletes from 37 countries. It was the third IFBB top international event hosted in Bialystok, so the IFBB President Dr. Rafael Santonja said in his opening speech that – “We are happy to be back in Bialystok because we are here among sport loving people”. This has been possible due to the passion and enthusiasm of two persons: Arkadiusz Leszczynski and his live-in partner Joanna Zapolska, who successfully put all things together and hired a recently constructed, top-modern Opera Podlaska theater as a venue site. Probably, it was the first IFBB world championships stage in the opera building.

President Santonja congratulated them and awarded with the IFBB Masters Degree Diplomas.

The event attracted most of the IFBB women’s sports stars from all over the world: Australia, Asia, Africa, South America, North America and Europe. The quality of athletes in men’s fitness class was the best in the IFBB history and they performed breath-stopping routines. In some categories 2011 world champions successfully but with the great effort regained their titles. In other categories new stars advanced to the top. Finally, Russia emerged as the best team, ahead of Slovakia, Ukraine, Poland and Australia. And this was a big surprise: Australia entered a very good team, winning the world championships gold medal for the first time in their history! Previously, they had only silver medal won in 1984 by bodybuilder Erica Geisen. Russia entered a big and experienced team but still their two former world champions were sitting in the audience: Yulia Ushakova and Yulia Zabelina and two more: Svetlana Kochkina-Leongardt and Natalia Proskuriakova worked in the judges panel.

Slovak bodybuilder Jana Purdjakova won the gold medal for the ninth time, breaking the El-Shahat Mabrouk record of eighth wins. And she is not going to finish her sport career soon…

Farewell banquet at the Golebiewski Hotel for nearly 400 people was elegant and moody, with excellent entertainment (illusionist performance).

Women’s fitness up to 163 cm category:

Nice line-up of 10 athletes and a mixture of youth with older ladies. One was 47 years old! And who told that fitness girls can’t be over 40? Even the winner, Russian star Olga Volokh is over 40. Amazing success of this matured fitness woman, whose previous best achievement was silver medal at the 2010 European Championships. Silver medal went to 13 years younger Timea Taraba-Sifter of Hungary, the bronze medal – to further 8 years younger Dominika Multanova of Slovakia, so the difference between gold and bronze medal winners was 21 years and between the youngest and the oldest women in this class: 27 years! And it was not visible on the stage.

Less participants but very famous. Gold medal went to Russian fitness diva from Astrakhan at the mouth of Volga River, Natalia Chukaeva. In this way Natalia regained the world title won in 2009. Former junior world champion Oksana Orobets of Ukraine finished second and Marta Aguiar of Uruguay – third. For Orobets it is the first World’s medal.

Men’s fitness:

Amazing group of athletes, who can perform the toughest strength and gymnastic moves. It was a hard, close battle between 2011 world champion Oleg Anissimov (Estonia) and 2010 European champion Konstantin Nekrasov (Russia). Nekrasov, who ruptured his Achilles tendon at the 2010 Worlds in Mexico City, performed a bit easier routine (4^th place in this round) but successfully finished in the physique assessment round, coming first in this round and in total. But the next athletes: Fedir Khashalov, Nazar Kharkhun, Lubos Koumal and Mariusz Lewandowski also performed outstanding routines of different styles and got a strong applause.

Former top stars: Daria Shevchenko (Ukraine), Heather Schofield (UK), Eva Zegan (Poland), Valeria Ammirato (Germany) and Maja Pavlovic (Serbia) couldn’t defend their top places against the attacks of a “new wave” athletes and dropped in the classification. This time the medals went to: Amy Wright (Australia), Stefania Bia (Romania) and Olga Grinskis (Lithuania). Congratulation to the Australian Federation for their historical, first Worlds gold medal.

Women’s bikini fitness up to 168 cm category:

In the absence of 2011 world champion Nikola Weiterova (turned pro), there was a returned match between new European champion Tanja Canc (Slovenia) and third place winner Karina Mozgayova-Antovska (Slovakia). The result: 7:9 for Mozgayova-Antovska, so the change of the guard has taken place. 2011 Worlds 5^th place winner Kristina Karaliute-Stoliaroviene (Lithuania) moved up to the 3^rd place and Ukrainian rising star Liudmila Diachuk to the 4^th position.

Women’s bikini fitness over 168 cm category:

Newly established category with 20 athletes in the line-up. European champion Anna Virmajoki grasped the next title and seems to be undefeated in this class this year. Silver medal for Rhiannon Harris – the next outstanding success of Australian team. Then, three well-know stars: Vladimira Krasova (Czech Republic), Egle Eller-Nabi (Estonia) and Jana Majernikova (Slovakia) who was silver medal winner last year. The tallest girl (177 cm) in the line-up Adalheidur Olafsdóttir (Iceland) didn’t enter the semifinals.

Women’s body fitness up to 158 cm category:

2011 stars have kept their positions: Elina Gook of Russia (gold medal) and Mari Pakkila of Finland (bronze medal). They were separated by a young German gifted competitor Angela Derzapf. Fourth place for the Brazilian star Janaina Ferreira and it was the best place coming to South America in bodyfitness at these Worlds. Not so good as previously. Nice comeback of former European champion Martina Tarkova (Slovakia) who took the 6^th position.

So tough category that many stars failed to enter the semifinals: Yulia Horyachun, Nelly Tsyshkevich, Vitaliya Dmitrieva. The battle at the top: 2011 world champion Zrinka Fiser (Croatia) vs. 2010 European champion Anna Szczotka (Poland). Szczotka won the first round but the second round and final victory went to Fiser. It is her third world title. Fourth place to South America: Analia Galeano of Argentina. Former world bodybuilding champion Alina Cepurniene in the 9^th position.

Women’s body fitness up to 168 cm category:

So packed out category that so well-know champions: Daniela Pfeiffer (Germany), Vanesa Astoul (france) and Eva Rusan (Croatia) placed out of the top ten. Sensational come back of the former world championships runner-up Cecilia Benjaminson (Sweden) after six-year break and the 9^th place. 2009 world champion Katarzyna Kozakiewicz-Kowalik in the 5^th place only. New stars entered the finals and only 2011 world champion Ekaterina Gamagina (Russia) has kept the leadership. Her dreams came true: she won the overall title – the only title lacking in her collection. Now will start her pro career (won Pro Card in April in Madrid).

Silver medal to a young (18 years old) and extremely attractive “Siberian Pearl” Aminat Tuleubayeva (Russia) who probably will take the leadership left by Gamagina.

Women’s body fitness over 168 cm category:

Unbelievably successful year for Belarusian athlete Anastasia Gurina, who first finished 2^nd at the European Championships in May and now took the world title, pushing down the European champion Khoudiedji Sidibe (France) and Ukrainian star Olga Karavayeva.

Women’s body bodybuilding up to 55 kg

Famous Jana Purdjakova of Slovakia came to win her 9^th world title and have won it with perfect scores. In the next two places two bodybuilders returning after long few-year break. They met 10 years ago at the 2002 European Championships when Joanna Krupa (Poland) took the continental title, ahead of Silvia Matta (Italy). Then Krupa had difficult years fighting against drug abuse but she survived and came back. Matta tried professional bodybuilding for four years and also returned. Their meet after so many years was successful for both of them as Matta won the silver medal and Krupa the bronze medal.

Women’s body bodybuilding over 55 kg

Very successful season for British competitor Renee Campbell, who first won bronze medal at the European Championships and now was declared the best of the world. European champion Maryna Alf finished in the 2^nd position and Czech bodybuilder Jana Bendova in the third. Well-know former stars: Natalia Vtyurina (Russia), Ewa Sedkowska (Poland) and Branislava Jovanovic were a bit too smooth and dropped to the lower places.
