2013 ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: LONG LIST OF ATHLETES COMING TO ALMATY

    by Andrew Michalak

Bodybuilding (in all its styles and versions) is booming in the IFBB this spring! After so successful Arnold Festivals in North America (Columbus, Ohio, USA) and South America (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) there were two outstanding European Championships (in Santa Susana, Spain and in Chisinau, Moldova) with historical records of participation (altogether 564 athletes!) and now we will have the next record breaking continental event: 2013 Asian Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. First time the best physique sports athletes from all parts of Asia will come to this big country located at the junction of Europe and Asia (Ural River). And there will be nearly 200 of them!

Eastern Asian bodybuilding superpowers: South Korea and Japan will meet South Asia biggest nation: India and they will face bodybuilders from the West Asian stronghold – Gulf and Middle East countries: Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Emirates, Oman, Iran, Iraq and Yemen. Following tens of years of IFBB activity in these countries, started by the IFBB founder and its first President late Mr. Ben Weider and vigorously continued under the leadership of Dr. Rafael Santonja, effectively supported by the Asian Federation President Sheikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa and National Bodybuilding and Fitness Federations Presidents, Asia has brought-up many top-level world class bodybuilders, who won a lot of medals at the IFBB world championships in the recent years.

Many countries enter big teams of 10 or more athletes to this year’s Asian Championships in Almaty. It will be a real body beauty and muscle power festival. National Teams will arrive to Almaty on Friday, May 31st, 2013 and the battle will start Saturday morning, at 10:00 am local time (5:00 am GMT), at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Culture and Sports. Asian Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness annual Congress will take place Sunday morning.

IFBB Press Commission will be there: our photo champion Mr. Igor Kopcek and myself, so visit the IFBB website from time to time to see the updates.

The only remaining question is: who will win the Asian Champion title this year? The winners are hidden in the following list of participants:

    2013 ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS JUST STARTED

    by Andrew Michalak

    illnew01-1.jpg

First time in the Asian bodybuilding history the best physique sports athletes from all parts of the continent came to Kazakhstan, the country located at the junction of Europe and Asia (Ural River). National Teams were coming to Almaty all Friday, even late in the evening. But the Championships started with the Press Conference at 15:00, run by the Asian Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness [AFBF] President Sheikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa of Bahrain, with the IFBB General Secretary William Tierney, IFBB Judges Committee Chairman Pawel Filleborn, Kazakhstan Federation General Secretary Alexander Kolyuka and myself sitting at the head table. Many different questions were asked by the press and TV journalists. Sheikh Abdulla revealed his five-point plan of further physique sports development in Asia. The plan will be discussed in details at the AFBF Congress Sunday morning. Also he introduced the first chairwoman of the recently created AFBF Women’s Committee: Dr. Reem Jaffar Al Bareeq.

After the Press Conference the next important meeting took place: Team Managers and Judges Meeting. Mr. Pawel Filleborn discussed the new approach to physique sports judging and the current judging system. After the detailed technical discussion, the room was re-arranged to run the registration of athletes and weigh-in. Athletes were coming to registration as National Teams, not by categories this time.

Because of the great number of athletes (over 160), the whole procedure lasted till the midnight. Enclosed is the finals list of registered athletes. We saw many top quality men bodybuilders, with deeply separated and shredded muscles. Also women bodyfitness and fitness athletes with delicate, nicely shaped silhouettes.

Many categories will have full semifinals and in few of them the elimination round will be needed. Many countries entered big teams of over 10 competitors, with the Kazakhstan Team over 20 athletes. From what we could see during the registration, the Championships will have very close battles in most of categories, and the quality of athletes will be amazing. Below are pictures showing top athletes and the climate of the event. More information tomorrow. Stay tuned!…

2013 AFBF ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS – SEMIFINALS

    by Andrew Michalak
    All photos by http://www.eastlabs.biz.

2013 AFBF (IFB:cool: Asian Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships are progressing well. Saturday was the day of semifinals in all categories with more than 6 athletes. They are almost all men’s bodybuilding categories plus junior heavyweight and masters. In a new IFBB judging system introduced and supervised by the IFBB Judges Committee Chairman Pawel Filleborn, all 9 panel judges delivered their top five athletes proposals in the semifinals and those athletes who were mentioned by most of the judges were called out to the first comparison, then the second five comparison, third five and, sometimes more.

In all categories the battle was close and tough as the quality of the top athletes were perfect. Attention was paid to the improper use of tanning / bronzing products as well as to the unnatural look (shape) of muscles, what might be caused by the injection of some external fluids. This has been a minor problem till now but IFBB decided to react quickly and decisively, with zero tolerance. The same regarding the expanding stomach but there were no such cases at these Championships.

Sunday finals will be a very exciting show as most of the finalists are perfectly prepared to this event, displaying incredible combination of muscle size and quality (separation, details, hardness). And tomorrow they will perform their posing routines. On Sunday also the Asian women will come into play, and there are more women athletes at these Asian Championships than ever before.

The AFBF Congress will take place in the morning, so the finals will start at 15:00 (3:00 pm) local time (10:00 am GMT). Looking at the List of finalist we can come to the conclusion that it is like an East Asia vs. West Asia match, with Central Asia athletes trying to make them some problems in some categories. But this reflects the current “balance of power” in Asian men’s bodybuilding. In women’s physique sports Central and East Asia are the main players. The new AFBF President Shake Abdulla Al Khalifa initiative is aimed to make the women’s physique sport development in Asia more equalized.

Now, have a look how the battle was run in the semifinals.
